Newsletter, Twitter & RSS News Feeds

The Help Accountants newsletter gives you news as it breaks. The newsletter is not like some of the other newsletters. It is not just a method to push adverts. If there is no breaking news then there will not be a newsletter. The newsletter is free to registered members as well as guests. What are Tweets?

Tweets are short snippets of information that let people know what is happening. The 140 character limit prevents them being used for real accountancy information, so Help Accountants are currently just using them to post links to more detailed reports.

What are News Feeds?

News feeds allow you to see when websites have added new content. You can get the latest headlines in one place, as soon as its published, without having to visit the websites you have taken the feed from.

RSS stands for 'Really Simple Syndication'. In essence, the feeds themselves are just web pages, designed to be read by web browsers like Firefox, Internet Explorer etc.

How do I start using feeds?

The first thing you need is something called a news reader. This is a piece of software that checks the feeds and lets you read any new articles that have been added. There are many different versions, some of which are accessed using a browser, and some of which are downloadable applications. The latest versions of Firefox, Opera and Internet Explorer have built in support for RSS Feeds.

Browser-based news readers let you catch up with your RSS feed subscriptions from any computer, whereas downloadable applications let you store them on your main computer, in the same way that you either download your e-mail using Outlook, or keep it on a web-based service like Hotmail.

Once you have chosen a news reader, all you have to do is to decide what content you want it to receive. For example, if you would like the latest HelpAccountants news, simply click on the orange icon above. The orange icon is a globally recognised logo that is used by all compliant sites.

Some browsers, including Firefox, Opera and Internet Explorer, automatically check for feeds for you when you visit a website, and display an icon when they find one. This can make subscribing to feeds much easier.
